NBC 5 Sports Wins Barbara Jordan Media Award

Team led by sports anchor Matt Barrie wins for compelling “Baty Bot” story

NBC 5 sports anchor/reporter, Matt Barrie, sports photographer/editor, Noah Bullard, and photographer, Peter Hull, win the 2012 Barbara Jordan Media Award in the TV Feature-Extended category for “The Baty Bot” story.

"The Baty Bot" story highlights high school freshman Lyndon Baty from Knox City, Texas. Baty has infantile polycystic kidney disease and uses a robot along with his love of sports to overcome isolation.

"We are extremely honored that the Baty Bot received this recognition," said Barrie, "Especially because it will allow more people to experience how great of a person Lyndon is – he’s a fighter and an inspiration."

This is NBC 5’s second Barbara Jordan Media Award in three years. Barrie and Bullard’s story "Brian’s Song" won in the TV Feature-Extended category in 2009.

The Barbara Jordan Media Award is an award given each year by the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities in conjunction with local committees throughout the state to recognize and honor journalists for outstanding reports on individuals with disabilities. The award is broken into categories of Print Feature, Print News, Photojournalism, TV Feature, TV Documentary, and Special Contribution by an Organization and the Internet.

Barrie, Bullard and Hull will receive their award at The 29th Annual Barbara Jordan Media Awards Ceremony to be held in partnership with Texas State University on Saturday, April 28th at the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, Texas.
