GMU Selects First-Ever Homecoming Drag Queen

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Before Ms. Mason 2009 was crowned, she already was a queen. A drag queen.

Reann Ballslee -- the drag persona of Ryan Allen -- beat two female finalists in the e-mail voting for George Mason's homecoming queen, the Washington Post reported. He was crowned the first drag Ms. Mason in school history in a ceremony during halftime of the GMU-Northeastern basketball game at the Patriot Center over the weekend.

Some students praised the unprecedented election for open-mindedness and diversity, but others called it an embarrassment for the commuter school. School officials are fine with it, saying no gender guidelines have been established for the Mr. and Ms. Mason pageants, the Post reported.

Allen is the host of George Mason's annual drag show.
