Four people were shot early Sunday in Beaumont after the gunman was confronted by a homeowner whose place had been burglarized, police said.
Police are still searching for the gunman, Beaumont police spokeswoman Officer Carol Riley said.
A man returned home shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday and discovered his residence had been ransacked and burglarized, police said.
As he was on the phone with police, he noticed a suspicious man on the next block and confronted him from a distance, Riley said. The suspect then opened fire into a nearby crowd along a road, and then ran, she said.
Police did not immediately say why people were gathered along the road. Two victims were in the road, another in a drainage ditch and the fourth in a nearby residence, Riley said. Their injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening, Riley said, and all four were taken to a hospital. Police did not immediately provide names of the victims or further details on their conditions
Authorities characterized the incident as aggravated assaults and a burglary.
