Detouring a Detour Sign

Hacker compromises electronic road sign

A computer hacker, apparently an 8-year-old, tapped into an electronic road sign in downtown Houston during the weekend.

The merry prankster changed the intended message — “DETOUR” —to read “POOP,” although the Associated Press article didn’t explain if the word was used as a noun, verb, or adjective describing downtown Houston.

The little poop-head then changed the sign again yesterday to show the message, “: ) LOL," indicating he or she is an ardent Facebook user.

Workers with the Texas Department of Transportation managed to regain control of the sign, which now reads, “Why you little ...

The article went on to mention a similar scenario played out a couple of years ago in Austin when a hacker overwrote an electronic road sign with the message, “Zombies in area! Run!"

That one at least showed a little panache but the poop joke — classic as it might be — just failed to register on the clever-ometer.

Maybe next time kid, and there’s bound to be a next time.
