Witten Hopes Romo Gets to Continue to Play

When Cowboys tight end Jason Witten spoke to NBC Sports Network in Houston, Texas, as part of Super Bowl week, the veteran weighed-in on the future of his long-time Cowboys teammate and quarterback Tony Romo.

"I hope he gets to continue to play,” Witten said. “There's a burn inside of him to play. We'd all be surprised if he retired."

Romo spent all but one series of the 2016 season on the sidelines after rookie quarterback Dak Prescott led Dallas to a 13-3 record, tied for the most wins for a rookie QB in NFL history.  Romo ran the scout team during Cowboys practices extremely effectively, which is one reason Witten believes he’ll play again next season.

“The way he approached it in practice and ran scout team… we all sense (he wants to continue to play),” Witten said.  “The guy is so competitive and works at it and works at it.  He’s worked so hard to get himself back, now we’ll see what takes place going forward.”

One of the most-talked about topics at the Super Bowl has been about Romo’s future and potential suitors for the veteran quarterback.  Witten described Cowboys decision-makers as “intelligent people,” who will “formulate a plan and move forward.”

As for Witten, the 34-year old finished 2016 with 69 receptions and three touchdown catches, and said he’ll take his future “one year at a time,” but he believes he can “still play at a high level.”
