In his second NFL preseason game, rookie receiver and return man Lucky Whitehead returned two kicks for 53 yards and four punts for 45 yards, including a 26-yard dash in the third quarter. He also recorded a catch on offense, for six yards.
But for all the things he did on Sunday night, maybe equally important was what he didn’t do--namely, he didn’t fumble away a punt, like he did in the preseason opener against the Chargers.
“Yes, I didn’t fumble,” Whitehead said, per the Dallas Morning News. “I definitely think I improved. In the return game, I got more balls. I definitely feel like I’m getting better.”
Against the 49ers, Whitehead said he was a lot more comfortable back deep than he was against the Chargers, which is only understandable given that the Chargers game was the Florida Atlantic product’s first NFL action.
“I felt better back there, more poised,” he said. “It’s starting to come to me better. I’m understanding the speed of it. It’s definitely coming to me. It’s just a matter of time.”
