In Dallas, DeMarcus Ware's fancy new payday has given many pause to consider what is so often taken for granted. Namely, that he is one of the best, if not the best, pass rusher in football, very likely a future Hall of Famer.
The echoes of this talk, and of Ware's $78 million (plus one) deal has apparently made its way up Northeast to the Boston area, a development that has allowed Patriots head coach (and possible cheater) Bill Belichick to throw in his two cents. According to ESPNDallas.com, a reporter asked Thursday if the girth of the deal could hinder Dallas in the future.
(Stupid question, I know.)
"I can't imagine DeMarcus Ware hindering any team defense," Belichick said on Thursday, preaching the painfully obvious. "The guy's one of the best players in the league."
One of the best indeed. But what should strike Ware, and Ware-supporters, was a comparison Belichick would draw between the Cowboys linebacker and Lawrence Taylor, who Belichick coached in New York for ten years.
"It's like when we had Lawrence Taylor with the Giants. That guy was a force on every play. The offense had to account for him on every play. I think he helped our team defense probably as much as any player I ever coached."
Resonating praise, yes, but the comparison has been made before, by former head coach Bill Parcells, who was afforded the opportunity to coach both of the aforementioned beasts.
