Uniquely Named Reliever Steps Up in Debut

One of the many moves the Texas Rangers have already made with just eight games in the books was bringing in veteran relief pitcher Stolmy Pimentel via a waiver claim from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

You know what that means. Even though you may have no idea who Stolmy Pimentel — yes, that's spelled correctly — is, new Rangers manager Jeff Banister sure does from his days as the Pirates' bench coach.

Pimentel came into a tight spot in Monday night's game against the Angels, and he delivered. With two runners on base and two outs, he was brought in to face some guy named Mike Trout and induced a weak tapper back to the mound on the third base side. Pimentel fielded the ball cleanly and fired to first, only to see the incredible Trout beat the play out for an infield single to load the bases.

That brought up slugger Albert Pujols, and Pimentel induced a grounder to shortstop to end the inning. He went on to pitch two more innings before eventually being charged with a late insurance run that he didn't personally allow.

Pimentel said he's just happy to be in a big-league bullpen after being cut loose by the Pirates.

“For now I’m in the bullpen and that’s great," he told ESPN Dallas. "Wherever they need me, that’s what I’ll do.’’
