Uninspired Hires Proves Cowboys Right to Stick With Garrett

I’ve said repeatedly that – despite this year’s 4-12 disaster – the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones are better off sticking with Jason Garrett than starting over with a new head coach.

The last couple of weeks have proven why.

As in, of the NFL’s recent hires none are better than Garrett.

The Titans hired a guy who flamed out in both Buffalo and Jacksonville, for crying out loud. The 49ers somehow viewed Chip Kelly’s dumpster fire in Philadelphia as something they’d like to duplicate. And the Browns handed their reins to a Raiders’ reject.

So, really, you want to run Garrett out of town.

Since Sean Payton isn't leaving New Orleans and Jimmy Johnson isn’t un-retiring, the Cowboys’ choices to replace Garrett would have been similar to who’s been hired.

  • Titans – Mike Mularkey
  • 49ers – Chip Kelly
  • Browns – Hue Jackson
  • Dolphins – Adam Gase
  • Giants – Ben McAdoo
  • Buccaneers – Dirk Koetter
  • Eagles – Doug Pederson

In other words, yawn. Garrett is 40-40 in his five full seasons with one division championship. But he’s shown – as recently as 2014 – that he can lead a team to the brink of the NFC Championship. As underwhelming as that may sound, these recent hires have nothing close to it on their flimsy resumes.

Good news for Garrett in 2016: He coaches seven games against the newbies, two against Pederson and McAdoo and one each against Kelly and Koetter.
