Southland Announces All-Conference Football Teams with North Texas Ties

The Southland Conference released the 2017 All-Conference Football Teams on Tuesday with some ties to North Texas.

Former Dallas Carter running back and Sam Houston State standout Corey Avery was named to the All-Conference Offense Team. Avery has 849 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns for the Bearkats. Teammate Nathan Stewart from Bryan Adams was also named All-Conference First Team as a wide receiver.

Joining Avery and Stewart on the first team is Central Arkansas offensive lineman Cade Camp from Allen and Southeastern Louisiana offensive lineman and Keller alum Maea Teuhema.

On defense, Southeastern Louisiana linebacker Sione Teuhema, Maea’s older brother, was named First Team All-Conference.  Teuhema has 80 tackles and nine sacks this season for the Lions. Lamar defensive back and Mansfield Timberview alum Nate Jones was named to the All-Conference Second Team Defense.

Sam Houston State had the most selections with 13. Central Arkansas had five individuals honored- quarterback Hayden Hildebrand was named the 2017 Southland Conference Player of the Year, head coach Steve Campbell was named Coach of the Year, defensive back George Odum was named Defensive Player of the Year, running back and Everman alum Kierre Crossley earned Freshman of the Year honors and John Cook was voted Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Crossley is a former Inside High School Sports bobblehead winner.
