Should Dallas Look At Carl Nicks?

The Saints' guard is set to become a free agent at season's end

New Orleans Saints’ guard Carl Nicks still has a season to finish, but some folks are already wondering if the soon-to-be free agent might get a call from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. At least, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas is wondering that, and it makes for an interesting idea.

Nicks is thought to be one of the best, if not the best guard in this class of free agents, and as Archer points out, there is a connection between Dallas and Nicks as of a couple days ago.

Nicks was coached by Bill Callahan at Nebraska. Callahan was hired as the team’s offensive line coach this week to replace the retiring Hudson Houck.

To be sure, the 26-year-old would be an upgrade at the position. The team came into the season fairly high on rookies Bill Nagy and David Arkin, but Nagy suffered a season-ending fractured ankle in October, and Arkin was never active for a game in 2011. Veterans Montrae Holland and Kyle Kosier, meanwhile, are coming off a torn biceps and a torn MCL, respectively.

Holland and Derrick Dockery, who saw some action late in the year as injuries plagued the guard position, are free agents.
