Depending on when training camps begin this season, the Dallas Cowboys will be either here in Dallas or, if a deal is reached in time, San Antonio. Last season, the team split training camp between San Antonio and Oxnard, California in a move that some--including safety Gerald Sensabaugh--believe could have negatively affected the team early on.
Dallas started 1-7 under Wade Phillips, before he was replaced by Jason Garrett in the first ever midseason coaching change in franchise history.
“It had nothing to do with Wade leaving or Garrett coming on,” Sensabaugh said in a recent appearance on NFL Radio, per the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know, maybe guys were a little bit tired. Training camp was kind of dreadful over there. We did two camps. We went to San Antonio, did a week in Dallas, went to Oxnard, California, and we started off real slow. And it showed in our first six games.
“But not to say that as an excuse because we’re professionals and we know how to do the job and take care of things. But I think there were a lot of younger guys on that team, you count on a lot of rookies that have to step up and play, and I guess a lot of guys weren’t able to make that transition as easily as in the past.”
Sensabaugh, currently a free agent, has been absent from the Cowboys’ player-only workouts. Though he has stated that he’d be open to returning to Dallas, Sensabaugh has expressed interest in testing the market.
As for training camp, city officials in San Antonio remain “cautiously optimistic” that their city will host the Cowboys’ camp as planned.
