Scheppers' Up-and-Down Nightmare Continues

Tanner Scheppers reared his inconsistent, ugly head once again on Monday night as the one-time elite setup man allowed three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning to waste a 7-run rally from the Rangers and took the loss in an 8-7, walkoff win for the Colorado Rockies.

The loss dropped Scheppers to 3-1 on the season and saw his ERA climb to 4.65.

Scheppers has been pretty good at times — not rediscovering his fantastic 2013 self — but he's also been lit up like a candle at other times.

From June 17 to July 8, Scheppers appeared in nine games, working 9 1/3 innings, and didn't allow an earned run. During that run, opponents hit .103 against him and he struck out nine batters. He was a key part in what the Rangers were trying to throw together to resemble a back-end of their bullpen.

His last five games have been much different, as he's posted a 10.80 ERA with two strikeouts and three walks. He's allowed six hits in that time and has basically resembled a dumpster fire.

Scheppers appeared to be on the rise in 2013 when he posted a 1.88 ERA in 76 2/3 innings, but that heavy workload seemed to take a lot out of him and he's never been able to duplicate that success. You have to wonder how much longer the Rangers will put up with the inconsistency before they demote Scheppers.
