RG Leonard Davis' Starting Role is Safe

After being benched in Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Cowboys’ right guard Leonard Davis’ starting role was thought to be in jeopardy. Backup Montrae Holland played serviceably in Davis’ absence, and only came out when he suffered an eye injury--and this only fueled the thought that Davis could lose the starting gig.

According to head coach Wade Phillips, however, that’s not the case. Phillips said Monday that he viewed Davis’ performance in the first half of Sunday’s game as little more than an aberration.

"He's a Pro Bowl player, that's what I see," Phillips said, per the Dallas Morning News. "I thought he played good when he went back in.”

Indeed, he is a Pro Bowl player--or, at least, he has been in each of the past three seasons. But Davis described his performance Sunday as the worst of his ten-year career, adding that--though he’s never considered losing his starting job--if he continued to play the way he did on Sunday, he wouldn’t blame the Cowboys if they bumped him down the depth chart.

"I never really thought of it like that,'' Davis said. "I feel like if I work hard and do the right things and do what it takes I (should) be in there. But if I go out and do like I did yesterday, nah. ...I'm honest with myself and with everyone else. I'm not going to feel like I should be something when I'm not or deserve something when I shouldn't.''
