Report: NFL Leaning Toward Cowboys-Redskins on Thanksgiving

The Cowboys last played the Redskins on Thanksgiving in 2012

It looks like 2016 could be one of those years where the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day Game is also a legitimate rivalry game.

According to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal, the NFL is leaning toward having the Cowboys and Redskins face off on Turkey Day for the first time since 2012—which wasn’t that long ago, but seems like a long time because then rookie sensation Robert Griffin III was still a beloved hero in DC at the time, and for good reason.

The Redskins won that game 38-31.

Sources said that the league is likely to schedule a Cowboys-Redskins matchup for Fox’s Thanksgiving Day game,” Ourand writes. “Look for the league to cross-flex an NFC North rival to play the Lions on CBS, most likely the Vikings.”

Last Thanksgiving was pretty unkind to the Cowboys, if you remember. They were blown out by the eventual NFC Champion Panthers 33-14, and lost Tony Romo to a fractured collarbone for the second time in 2015.
