Report: Joseph Randle Facing NFL Discipline

Randle could be suspended for conduct detrimental to the league

Sometime in the past week, the NFL determined that Joseph Randle violated the personal conduct policy over the offseason and, now, the Cowboys’ running back is facing discipline from the league as a result, ESPN's Todd Archer and Adam Schefter report.

This goes back to a February incident in a Wichita, Kansas hotel room that saw Randle arrested for marijuana possession, after the mother of his son called police to report a domestic violence incident involving a gun. The charges were dropped in April, but the possibility of NFL discipline--under that blanket term of conduct detrimental to the league--was always on the table.

It’s been a tumultuous week and a tumultuous year for Randle. Four months prior to the incident in Wichita, he had been arrested at a shopping mall in Frisco for attempting to shoplift a package of underwear and a tester bottle of cologne. He made headlines this offseason when he opined that DeMarco Murray had left a lot of “meat on the bone” in 2014, when (it’s worth noting) Murray broke the single-season franchise rushing record. Earlier in the season, he so angered running backs coach Gary Brown with his penchant for trying to extend the ball over the goal line while diving through the air that Brown had to be restrained.

Then, on Wednesday, having been demoted in favor of Darren McFadden on the depth chart, Randle went AWOL from Valley Ranch. It was originally thought that his abrupt departure was the result of his disappointment over the demotion, but now it’s not so clear. He was supposed to meet with the team again on Thursday, but instead, Jason Garrett said they gave him an excused day off. Garrett added that he hadn’t spoken to Randle.

Randle started each of the Cowboys’ first six games and posted 315 yards and four touchdowns on 76 carries.
