At the very least, the Dallas Cowboys are doing their due diligence when it comes to Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott, pretty much universally regarded as the top back in the draft.

The Cowboys worked Elliott (as well as his teammate, defensive end Joey Bosa) out in Columbus last month and, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, he was scheduled to fly to Dallas for a pre-draft visit on Sunday.

It’s still seems like something of a stretch to imagine Dallas taking Elliott at No. 4 overall, if only because defense seems a much more pressing need, and running backs rarely go so high anymore.

As Zac Jackson of Pro Football Talks point out, there have been just three running backs taken in the top 10 picks of the last seven drafts, and just one of those—Trent Richardson in 2012—came in the top four.
