Red River Rivalry to Continue in Dallas Until at Least 2020

Texas, OU to keep playing in Dallas through 2020

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced Friday that the annual tradition of Texas-OU weekend will continue in Fair Park until at least 2020.

"I am very pleased to announce that Pete Schenkel has informed me that the University of Texas and Oklahoma University have signed the agreement to extend the 'Red River Classic' through 2020," Rawlings said in a news release.

While the news release didn't officially say it, it's safe to assume the deal keeps the game in Fair Park, amid the sights and sounds of the State Fair of Texas, since the city of Dallas is spreading the word. That's good news since, whether you call it Texas-OU or OU-Texas, or the Red River Shootout or Red River Rivalry, the game has been played in Dallas for the last 83 years -- since 1929.

The continuation means that Dallas will be able to celebrate at least 92 consecutive years of hosting the rivalry.

The Longhorns and Sooners first played, however, in Austin in 1900, a contest Texas won 28-2.  Since 2000, Oklahoma has doubled-up Texas' victories with an 8-4 record in the annual game including winning the Golden Hat in 2010 and 2011.

Texas leads the all-time series with a record of 59-42-5.

According to USA Today, the Red River Rivalry is recognized as one of the top 10 hottest tickets in all sports, including the Kentucky Derby, the Masters, Lakers courtside and the Indy 500.
