Rangers Prospect Selected to All-Star Weekend Futures Game

SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on July 9th in Miami

One of the top prospects in the Rangers organization will be busy during All-Star weekend in Miami, Florida.

Pitcher Jonathan Hernandez of advanced Class A Down East (NC) has been selected to the World Team roster for the 2017 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. The 20-year old is the organization’s only representative in the game this year.

The numbers don’t seem impressive at first. Hernandez is a combined 3-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 13 games for both Class A Hickory and Down East. However, he does have 67 strikeouts in 67.1 innings of work. The young righty remains a work in progress and is listed as the No. 18 prospect in the Rangers organization.

Hernandez added some velocity to his fastball after making the jump to Class A last season. After sitting around 90 mph in 2015, he worked at 91-94 and hit 97 at times with good sink. Scouts believe Hernandez has developed a good feel with his changeup that grades out better than his slider. Both pitches show the potential to become at least average with upside.

The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will be played on Sunday, July 9th at Marlins Park in Miami.
