Rangers Looking into Trade Offers for Sam Dyson

Former Rangers closer was designated for assignment on Friday

Sam Dyson may still have some value to the Rangers after all.

However, it will not be on the field but instead in the trade market. A couple of teams are reportedly interested in the Rangers former closer, who was designated for assignment on Friday. General manager Jon Daniels told the Ben & Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan that he’s weighing offers and hopes to make a deal within the next day or two.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Minnesota Twins are among the teams whose names have appeared in the rumor mill. The Twins are an interesting case since they have been dealing with bullpen issues of their own despite fighting with the Cleveland Indians for the top spot in the A.L. Central. Add to the mix that the Twins general manager, Thad Levine, is a former Rangers assistant general manager who is familiar with Dyson from their days in Texas.

Dyson was solid during his first year and a half with the Rangers after being acquired from the Miami Marlins in 2015. Last year, he became the closer and finished third in the A.L. with 38 saves. This season, the wheels fell off. Dyson blew his first three save opportunities and eventually lost the closer role. In 16 2/3 innings, he has a 10.80 ERA with a -1.6 WAR.

Off course, any team that deals for the righty will have a reclamation project on their hands who is making $3.25 million this season and is out of options and arbitration eligible next season. If a deal is done, it will be interesting to see what the Rangers would get in return.
