Rangers Gain Ground on Top Teams

Texas takes two of three from Toronto during home series

The Texas Rangers gained ground on playoff contenders with a win over Toronto in Arlington Wednesday night.

Texas beat Toronto 6-4, taking three of four from the Blue Jays in the Arlington series.

Elvis Andrus hit a go-ahead two-run homer and  Nelson Cruz had three hits including his 30th home run.

Texas moved within 3½ games of the AL West-leading Angels, who have lost two in a row. It is the closest the Rangers have been in the division since the same margin Aug. 9 after a win in Los Angeles. The Rangers are 2½ games behind wild-card leader Boston.

The playoff chase heats up as two key players are out with injuries. Josh Hamilton is listed as day to day after suffering back spasms during Wednesday's game. Third baseman Michael Young will miss at least two weeks with a strained hamstring.

Texas travels to Baltimore on Friday for a weekend series.
