Rangers, Daniels Discussing Extension

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels isn't a real popular character around these parts right now and for several reasons.

First off, this is going to be end up being a historically bad season for the Rangers. Secondly, Daniels has failed to bring back several big fan favorites in recent years. Third, there was the whole public smattering between Daniels and Nolan Ryan, who is now in Houston. And finally, now there are reports surfacing that Ron Washington's resignation on Friday was a result of one last blow-up between Daniels and the former Rangers manager.

Yet, there are several reports that Daniels is discussing a contract extension with the Rangers. His current contract expires after the 2015 season.

Daniels has done enough to prove he's worthy of being retained. He assembled the best Rangers era in club history, which included consecutive AL pennants and four straight seasons of playing beyond Game 162.

Now, Daniels has some serious work to do. It's true, just about every Rangers star player was hit with significant injuries in 2014, but even with everyone back next season you have to wonder how the Rangers will stack up against the A's and the Angels.

There are several things that need to be addressed this winter, starting with the need for another top-end starting pitcher with several quality free agents set to hit the market. If Daniels has more than just the upcoming season on his contract, it will give him more latitude to make moves and get club business done this winter.

So stay tuned, everyone's favorite general manager could be around here for a while.
