Rangers Apparently Still Interested in Hamels

There is obviously a reason the Texas Rangers would be interested in acquiring a pitcher of Cole Hamels' quality. He's one of the few big-league aces — not all teams have one — and another one of those aces, the Rangers' Yu Darvish is out for the season after going under the knife for Tommy John surgery.

So yeah, while no one on the Rangers' current staff is someone who could replace Darvish, Hamels could come really close to accomplishing that.

There are also several reasons why the Rangers would be crazy to go trade for Hamels, namely his massive contract and the fact it'd take a huge prospect package to add him to a team that was a questionable contender before Darvish was hurt.

Either way, national reports from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman seem to indicate that the Rangers and Phillies are actually still discussing a Hamels deal, even though that seemed to die a while back when the Rangers traded for Yovani Gallardo, who has an expiring contract after this season.

If, and it's a big if, the Rangers do make that huge splash and go get Hamels, he'd be a Darvish replacement this year and help form a great 1-2 punch with him in 2016 and beyond, so it wouldn't be a complete disaster, but with the Rangers' big contracts for Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo already looking like bad deals, it could be financially crippling, not to mention prospect decimating.
