Ramos Steps Up in Spot Start

When the Rangers had to decide who to call up to make a spot start for Cole Hamels, who was dealing with a mild groin strain after his previous outing, the general thought was that they'd go with a left-handed pitcher to combat the Yankees' lefty-heavy lineup.

That meant, most likely, that veteran Cesar Ramos was set to make his debut with the Rangers after primarily pitching out of the bullpen for the Padres, Rays and Angels before signing a minor-league deal with Texas this winter.

On Monday, that happened, and it really wasn't bad at all.

Ramos made his first start since 2014 and turned in a quality one, going six innings and allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out five.

It was by no means a sterling outing for Ramos, who allowed two home runs, but it did a lot of good by saving the bullpen when spot starts can often turn into three-inning affairs.
