Jurickson Profar has had an awful year.
After injuring his shoulder in spring training and going out on a rehab assignment after the season began, Profar had a setback on his torn shoulder muscle and then was shut down again. Weeks after that, Profar came out and said he "didn't expect" to play again in 2014.
On Thursday, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels announced via a conference call that Profar will not play this season, making what we pretty much already knew officially official.
It's been an unfortunate lost season for the 21-year-old former top prospect in all of baseball that has now somehow fallen into all-but-forgotten territory.
Profar struggled last season as a 20-year-old in a utility role, and was set to be the Rangers' everyday second baseman after they dealt away Ian Kinsler this offseason, but instead Profar has now given way to another young prospect.
Rougned Odor has played more games at second base than anyone else for the Rangers this year, and has fared well for himself as a guy who wasn't expected to be in Arlington this year. He's younger than Profar, and now has played his way into the club's future plans while Profar has set aside waiting to begin a throwing program.
He's set to undergo an MRI in a couple of weeks and then could begin a throwing program in hope of playing in the Arizona Fall League this fall, but his 2014 season with the Rangers is now officially over.
