In previous years, the Texas Rangers have steered clear of guys that are strictly designated hitters, as former skipper Ron Washington liked to play the versatility card and rotate the DH spot to give guys partial days off and not handcuff himself, which is an understandable theory. But how will new Rangers manager Jeff Banister play it? If he is a fan of the true blue DH, they don't get any better than Martinez. The veteran led the league in both on-base percentage and OPS and was a formidable 1-2 punch with Miguel Cabrera in Detroit.
The big question with Martinez, who will be 36 next season, is how much money he'll command in free agency, and with his past two seasons, it'll likely be a pretty large amount for a guy that played 37 games in the field in 2014 (35 at first base, two at catcher). It will also be interesting to see what the Rangers' plans are with Mitch Moreland, who looks to fill the DH role in 2015, at least at this point.
