Potential Target: Jonny Gomes

The Rangers' top winter priority is upgrading its starting pitching but they're also going to be looking for a bat.

Target: Jonny Gomes, OF/DH

2014 stats: .234 batting average, .327 on-base percentage, eight doubles, six home runs, 37 RBIs in 112 games

In what would be one of the cheapest possible free agent signings of a proven big-league player, the Rangers are said to be in on the veteran outfielder and noted clubhouse leader everywhere he's ever been. Gomes wouldn't be a star for the Rangers, but he would bring a needed edge to the clubhouse and his plate approach could rub off on his teammates as a patient hitter that no pitchers like to face.

Despite his somewhat pedestrian numbers, Gomes was a key member of the 2013 Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series, and that all goes back to his clout in the room and his gritty approach to the game. He could be the perfect under-the-radar acquisition for the Rangers, who could use Gomes to platoon with Mitch Moreland at DH and with whoever else they decide on for the left field spot while they spend their bigger resources on starting pitching.
