Avila could still be under contract with the Tigers, making this a moot point, but it's unlikely they'll pick up their club option on the veteran catcher for in excess of $5 million with only a $200,000 buyout if they decide to opt out.
The Rangers could bring in Avila to be a timeshare guy with Robinson Chirinos, and his history suggests he could see an offensive resurgence to a point and possibly win the job outright, and you can do a whole lot worse than Chirinos as a No. 2 catcher.
