Payton, Saints “Optimistic” Brees Will Play Against Cowboys

Drew Brees was held out of the Saints' loss to the Panthers last Sunday with a shoulder injury

After being held out of the New Orleans Saints’ matchup with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, a 27-22 loss, Drew Brees thinks there’s a good chance his shoulder will be well enough to return this week against the Cowboys--and head coach Sean Payton is similarly optimistic.

“[T]he one thing [that] is certain is the day-to-day progress he has made and truly a week ago at this time, Wednesday and Thursday, we didn’t know,” Payton said, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “It was day-to-day and then on Friday, we just felt where it was at that time it was smart to rest it.

I would say optimistic and yet will just pay attention to his symptoms and strength.”

The Saints are 0-3 on the season and riding a six-game losing streak at the Superdome, where the Sunday Night tilt between the Cowboys and Saints will unfold.

Brees will throw in Saints practice on Tuesday to test the injured shoulder.
