To get a little more money in his pocket this past summer, Kyle Orton strung the Dallas Cowboys along, waffling back and forth between retirement before ultimately leaving to sign a two-year deal with the Buffalo Bills just a couple of weeks before the season began.
Now, Orton appears to really be retiring, as he announced his retirement Monday morning after telling reporters he was leaving his locker to go to meeting and never returning. He later released a statement through the Bills.
"I just have been going at it for 10 years and it's just a family decision and I've decided to get home and be a dad and call it a day," the 32-year-old Orton said in the statement.
Orton went 7-5 as the Bills starter this year after supplanting the inconsistent E.J. Manuel at quarterback early in the year. He had the Bills in the playoff hunt until nearly the end of the year and gave them their first winning record in a good while.
If you remember, Orton started the Cowboys' Week 17 game in 2013, a winner-takes-the-East game against the Eagles. He played well but threw a last-minute interception to ice the game for the Eagles and send the Cowboys home with no postseason.
It later came out after his departure this summer that a reason he wanted out of Dallas was because of a strained relationship with Cowboys starter Tony Romo, forcing the Cowboys to sign Brandon Weeden as Romo's backup. Weeden, of course, stunk up the joint to the highest degree in his lone start this year — a loss at home to the Cardinals.
