On Deck: World Series, Games 3-5

On Deck will be here all season to provide you with everything you need to know (and a few things you don't) about every playoff series during the 2015 season.

The Teams: The Mets seem to be that team every year that gets hot at just the right time and just waltzes through the postseason after pulling off a pretty improbable sweep of the Cubs. The Royals, on the other hand, are back for a second straight year after losing in seven games to the Giants a year ago.

Past 2015 Meetings: The teams last met in 2013, when the Royals took two of three games in Citi Field. Before that, the Royals took of three games in 2004, and the Mets took two of three in 2002. Those nine games are all the matchups between the teams since Interleague play began in 1997.

Pitching Matchups: Friday — Yordano Ventura (13-8, 4.08 ERA) vs. Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 3.24); Saturday — Chris Young (11-6, 3.06) vs. Steven Matz (4-0, 2.27); *Sunday — Edinson Volquez (13-9, 3.55) vs. TBD

*if necessary

What's Hot: Mike Moustakas has awaken from a slow start to the postseason with a monster World Series so far. In the first two games, the third baseman is hitting .444 with two RBIs. Salvador Perez is hitting .300 in the first two games, and Alex Gordon had the big game-tying homer in Game 1, while Eric Hosmer had the game-winning RBI to give him 15 RBIs this postseason. The Royals' bullpen worked eight scoreless innings in Tuesday's 14-inning affair.

Lucas Duda has carried over from his big performance in Game 4 of the NLCS and is hitting .444 in the first two games of the series. Other than him, no Mets player is really hitting the ball that well. NLCS MVP Daniel Murphy is just 2-for-9 in the first two games. The majority of the Mets' bullpen has been good.

What's Not: Lorenzo Cain, Kendrys Morales and Alex Rios all have just one hit each in the first two games of the World Series.

Mets closer Jeurys Familia gave up the game-tying homer in Game 1 in a game that ended up going 14 innings before the Royals won the game. Pretty much name a Mets hitter, and he fits in this category, other than Duda. A lot of that has to do with the fact Johnny Cueto fired a two-hit complete game in Game 2.
