Dutch Speedskater Nuis Wins Men's 1000m, His 2nd Gold

Kjeld Nuis had already won the 1500m in Pyeongchang

Twice is nice for Kjeld Nuis.

The Dutchman became the first speedskater to win two gold medals at the 2018 Winter Games by beating the field in the men's 100 meters Friday at the Gangneung Oval. He had already won the 1500m in Pyeongchang, and is the 2017 world champion in the 1000m.

The gold medal reasserted the Netherlands' dominance at these Olympics. The Dutch team had been upset twice in the team pursuit Wednesday, only taking silver on the women's side and bronze on the men's.

The Netherlands has now won the gold medal in seven of the 12 speedskating events so far. It's failed to reach the podium in just two of those events — the men's and women's 500m.

Norway's Havard Lorentzen was just .04 seconds slower and won silver, adding to the gold he won in the 500m. South Korea's Kim Tae-Yun won bronze. American Joey Mantia just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth.

Two of the strongest competitors, both Russian, were not competing due to doping violations.

Mantia was the fastest American, above Shani Davis, who holds the world record of 1:06.42, set in 2009, and Mitchell Whitmore.

Mantia is typically stronger in the 1500m, but beat Davis in the U.S. trials. Davis has not been able to replicate his previous dominance in recent seasons after winning two medals in the Turin Games and two in the Vancouver Games. He finished seventh, while Whitmore was in 10th.
