Olt Makes Cubs Roster

Earlier this week, Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels went on record saying he fears the big trade he made last summer for Cubs pitcher Matt Garza could end up haunting him.

The Rangers got Garza in a deal for former top prospect Mike Olt, highly regarded pitching prospect C.J. Edwards and one-time rotation piece Justin Grimm. They got three months of mediocrity from Garza before he went and signed with Milwaukee this winter.

It wasn't expected that any of the former Rangers would open the 2014 season on the Cubs' roster, but now, Daniels will find out even sooner if the deal will haunt him as Olt has made the club's Opening Day roster. Olt struggled with vision issues last year and hit .197 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs at the Triple-A level, split between Round Rock and Iowa.

The 25-year-old power-hitting corner infielder was once seen as the future third baseman of the Rangers, but Adrian Belte's stranglehold on the position, coupled with Olt's struggles at the plate, changed plans. This spring with the Cubs, Olt hit .273 with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He did strike out 17 times compared to just 15 hits.
