The Dallas Cowboys’ selection of Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft may ultimately mean far fewer carries for the team’s second newest running back, Alfred Morris, but Morris said recently that the pick did not make him regret choosing Dallas.
"None at all," Morris said. "This is where I'm supposed to be, and I'm excited about the opportunity and looking forward to it."
In the four seasons Morris was in Washington, the Redskins drafted four running backs after him, but none really cut into his workload until third rounder Matt Jones arrived last year.
"I'm used to it—it's a business at the end of the day," Morris said. "Competition only makes us better, so I get excited about it. It's definitely going to be a big challenge, but I'm excited and looking forward to it."
For what it’s worth, Morris was actually proud to see a running back go so high as Elliott did in this era of devalued running backs, even if he went to the team on which Morris will (also) be trying to find his place. With that in mind, Morris says he’ll do whatever he can to help Elliott, but is quick to remind everyone that he’s a newcomer to Dallas, too, meaning he might not have all the answers where playbook-specific questions are concerned.
"Certain things with him, I won't be able to do that—because I myself am learning a whole new playbook. So that'll be different," he said. "But if he wants some wisdom or just to learn -- this is my fifth year and I've learned a few things. If he wants to pick my brain about things, I'm an open book."
