NFC East Watch: New Redskins DC Feeling Confident

Joe Barry was hired to take over the Redskins defense last month

New Redskins defensive coordinator Joe Barry isn’t lacking any confidence going into Washington.

In a recent interview with 1360-AM Xtra in San Diego, where he spent the last four seasons as linebackers coach, Barry told his hosts he wasn’t feeling any pressure going into what will easily be the most high-profile job of his career to this point.

I don’t feel pressure, I apply pressure,” Barry said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “There’s no pressure at all.”

In Barry’s only other stint as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, he coached under his father in law and current Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli in Detroit in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, the Lions went 0-16, but Barry believes he learned a lot from being at the bottom of the barrel.

“You get better when things are tough, when things are hard, when you’re getting your face kicked in on a daily basis,” he said. “That’s when you truly grow, and you expand as a coach. I know one thing, as hard as those years were, I walked out of there 100 times better coach than I walked in, because it was hard. It wasn’t happy and rosy and wonderful. It was a fight.”
