NFC East Watch: Giants Working on Extension for Coughlin

Tom Coughlin currently has one year left on his contract with the Giants

In order to avoid having Tom Coughlin enter the 2015 season as a so-called lame duck, the New York Giants have started working on a one-year extension for the head coach that would, on paper, keep him in New York through the 2016 season, Dan Graziano of ESPN reported Thursday.

"I think that part of it's underway," Coughlin said, per ESPN.com. "Hopefully shortly you'll have some information about that. I don't think it's any big mystery. You don't have to be overly concerned about anything secretive. There's nothing to it."

Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004, and has won two Super Bowls with the team since, in 2007 and 2011. But with a regular season record of 163-139 going into next year, Coughlin knows the extra year on his deal won’t mean much in terms of job security if the Giants underachieve in 2015.

"There's 32 guys that coach one year at a time, and that's the way it is," Coughlin said. "I don't care how many years you've got on your contract."
