Monmouth University to Retire Miles Austin's Number

Miles Austin played for Monmouth University from 2002-2005

Wide receiver Miles Austin, who remains a Dallas Cowboy for the moment, will be honored by his alma mater, Monmouth University later this month.

The Monmouth Hawks will retire Austin’s No. 80 jersey at halftime of the men’s basketball game versus St. Peter’s on February 22. Austin played for Monmouth from 2002 to 2005, breaking the school records for career receiving yards and catches, before joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2006.

“I think it is fitting and appropriate that Miles Austin’s jersey is the first in program history to be retired,” Monmouth head coach Kevin Callahan said in a statement, per the Asbury Park Press. “Miles has made significant contributions to the program, he set a standard for a level of performance at Monmouth and has continued that in the NFL. Miles has remained very close to the Monmouth program and frequently returns to campus to interact with our players. He has been and continues to be a great ambassador of not just the football team but also the entire Monmouth University community.”

This is a much-needed bit of good news for Austin, who will most likely be cut by Dallas after June 1 in a salary-dumping move.
