Meet Kevin Ogletree

Half way through the preseason schedule, we're approaching decision time for the Dallas brass.

What to do with this $40 million white elephant hanging an insufficient 90 ft over the turf is certainly the most bandied about, the most fawned over, the most chuckled at (rightfully so), but it might not be the most difficult.

To blame for that is a young receiver who went undrafted out of Virginia named Kevin Ogletree.

Ogletree had been a model of consistency throughout camp. Nothing spectacular really, just run-of-the-mill, solid play at the receiver position--you know, running solid routes, getting open, catching footballs. As it turned out, Ogletree was saving the spectacular for a slightly larger stage than the Alamodome, making a highlight reel catch on a fade route during Dallas' 30-10 victory over the Titans on Friday night.

The rookie has become the surprise of camp, and, in doing so, posed a stickler of a question to Dallas' decision-makers. Namely, how do we keep Isaiah Stanback and Kevin Ogletree?

The bitter reality is that they probably can't.

The team doesn't seem ready to cut their losses with respect to Stanback, who has been maligned by injury for much of his short career; but at this point, it seems improbable that Dallas will be able to have their cake and eat it too, namely, to keep both. And, as far as position battles go, that for the number 5 receiver spot, based on what we've seen thus far this preseason, seems to be in the favor of Ogletree.

Unless Dallas is geared to carry six receivers, the beginning of the 2009 season may mean the end of the Isaiah Stanback project.
