Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett says he likes the character on the team this year. Garrett would be a star in the public relations world.

The Cowboys are missing important pieces to their defense, including linebacker Rolando McClain, who skipped the team’s flight to California for training camp.

McClain also didn’t participate in organized team activities and missed most of the voluntary offseason program. He did report to minicamp last month but didn’t practice. McClain could face a fine or worse from the team.

To make matters worse, McClain is suspended for the first 10 games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Garrett said the Cowboys will move on from players who don’t fit in the culture there. Yet, McClain is still on the team.

The Cowboys seem unwilling to part ways with McClain, which has left many shaking their heads why. Dallas re-signed McClain to a one-year deal worth as much as $5 million during the offseason. He received a $750,000 signing bonus. If the Cowboys were to cut him, that would be $750,000 counted against the salary cap.

However, they would gain $2.6 million in cap room due to his base salary of $1.25 million, along with $1.375 million in roster bonuses.

The Cowboys are already without linebacker Randy Gregory, who is reportedly in a treatment facility and facing an extension of his four game suspension. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is also facing a four-game suspension for a failed drug test.

There could be a decision made Friday on whether McClain fits in the future plans for the Cowboys. Right now, it’s not looking too promising.
