Matt Cassel: “I Will Be Better This Week”

Matt Cassel's Cowboys debut was hampered by three interceptions, including a pick-six

Matt Cassel is confident he can bounce back after his Dallas Cowboys debut was marred by three interceptions, including a pick-six, in a 27-20 loss to the New York Giants.

I will be better this week,” Cassel said, per Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas. “And I promise to work as hard as I can to be better this week.”

Obviously, this isn’t an easy task. The Seattle Seahawks are coming to town and, while they are currently a third place team with a 3-4 record, the defense has returned to form in recent weeks. They currently rank third in the league in total defense and third in passing defense.

Cassel, meanwhile, has only been a Cowboy for five weeks now. But he hopes his aforementioned debut illustrated for his teammates that, if nothing else, he’s a fighter. After all, he bounced back from his third interception of the day to lead a game-tying scoring drive late in the fourth quarter against the Giants--a drive that might be viewed a little differently if Dwayne Harris hadn’t strolled to the game winning touchdown on the ensuing kickoff.

“I don’t know if they know a lot about me, but I’m always going to fight for them,” Cassel said. “And I think they saw a little bit of that. No matter what the circumstance is, I’m not going to hang my head and be one of those guys that are going to sit there and mope around and just wait for the game to end. I’m going to fight until the end no matter what the circumstances, no matter how hard they got at times, and try to continue to put ourselves in position to win the ballgame.”
