Martinez Looking to Build on Recent Success

It's been more than two months since the Texas Rangers have won three straight games. Remember just a couple of years ago when the Rangers would go months at a time without losing consecutive games? Well, now the script has been flipped.

Riding a big two-game win streak, the Rangers will turn to young righty Nick Martinez on Tuesday night to try to put the Rangers in the win column for the third straight day in Seattle, and Martinez could be the right guy for the job if his recent run is any sign.

The 24-year-old, who made the unlikely jump from having pitched in just five Double-A games to the majors for the Opening Day rotation because of injuries, had arguably the best start of his career his last time out, when he fanned a career-high seven batters in six innings while picking up a victory over Miami.

He's now worked two straight outings of six innings and will look to do that again on Tuesday night. The Rangers have stuck with Martinez all throughout the year despite his struggles and have praised him repeatedly for his approach and demeanor on the mound. It seems they want him to be figure his way into the Rangers' 2015 plans, even with a suspected retooled rotation, and he can help his case with a solid string of starts to close this otherwise wasted season.
