Hall of Fame running back turned NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk doesn’t sound like a huge fan of Scott Linehan, the Cowboys’ latest play-caller.
Faulk spent the 2006 season, his final in the NFL, playing for Linehan in St. Louis but said the two only had one meeting during that year. But Linehan’s time as head coach as the Rams isn’t what draws criticism from Faulk. Rather, Faulk believes Linehan did too little with the many weapons at his disposal in his last stop, as offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions.
“You had a 5,000-yard passer, you had the best receiver in our game and you missed the playoffs,” Faulk said, per the Dallas Morning News. “I mean, we could give it to (Jim) Schwartz, but Schwartz didn’t call an offensive play or a defensive play. That’s just how it goes.
“I’m not knocking Linehan. He had a lot of success there, he did a lot of great things, but obviously it didn’t get them to the point of where Schwartz is still the head coach. You have to look at the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator and say OK, what happened.”
Like a lot of other folks, Faulk reads Linehan’s hiring as just another sign of dysfunction in Dallas.
“It’s just another way for the Cowboys to get around saying they didn’t fire a coach and that everything is happy in house,” Faulk said. “But you bring in another play caller. It was like last year. Everything was fine but (Bill) Callahan was going to call the plays instead of Garrett. But everything was fine. And then everything was fine when Wade (Wilson) went up to the booth. That was fine, too.”
Faulk then turned up the sarcasm.
“Everything is fine in Jerry’s world and that’s what we’re going to stick with,” he said. "Because they’re successful.”
