Marinelli Looking to Get Bruce Carter Back on Track

Rod Marinelli is trying to set fourth-year linebacker Bruce Carter for a bounce-back season in 2014.

Marinelli, who was promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator this offseason, says he put together a “get-better reel” for Carter to study.

Plays that maybe aren’t good enough, with technique,” Marinelli said, per the Dallas Morning News. “You put those things together and you sit down with the man and you show him this is exactly what we have to correct. That gives you a plan in the offseason. You don’t just show up, you have a plan. And that’s what we do. We expect every guy to follow the plan.”

In 2013, Carter finished third on the team in tackles with 96, but he seemed uncomfortable at times with his position change--from inside linebacker in the 3-4, the position he played in his first two seasons in the NFL, to outside linebacker in the 4-3 system brought in by Marinelli and Monte Kiffin. But Marinelli doesn’t think that should be any real issue for the North Carolina product moving forward--football is football, after all.

“I don’t do confidence stuff. Get down and play,” Marinelli said. “Here’s your assignment key. We want you to play fast. We want you to take the ball away. Let’s go play. It’s a man’s game. Let’s play it the right way. That’s what I want.”
