After a decade in the NFL, Dallas Cowboys long snapper L.P. LaDouceur is set to play in his first Pro Bowl, and the Canadian-born veteran is understandably excited.
“This is great,” Ladouceur told the team’s official website from his Phoenix-area hotel this week. “After 10 years, to get a little reward like this, it’s a little cherry on top of the sundae to me. I’m excited to be here.”
More casual fans--fans who probably don’t read this blog--might not know his name, which really speaks to his effectiveness as a long snapper. His job is to be a faceless but invaluable part of some of the less exciting facets of the game--punts, field goals and extra points. And he’s done it well, since Week 4 of the 2005 season, when he took over the position full-time.
If LaDouceur has his druthers, he’ll have plenty more opportunities for a return trip to the Pro Bowl.
Asked how long he’d like to keep playing, LaDouceur said--only half-jokingly, we’d imagine--“Until I’m 52.”
