Colby Lewis appears to be locked in once again after an awful outings a couple of weeks ago when he allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in less than three innings of work, resembling a similar stretch in 2014 when he got shelled in similar fashion in July and then rebounded by going the second half of the season as the Rangers' best starting pitcher.
He continued that on Sunday against the defending AL champs when, despite the Rangers losing the game to miss out on a sweep, Lewis worked seven strong innings and allowed three earned runs in a no-decision while walking one and fanning five batters.
Lewis gave up a run in each of the first two innings — both on sacrifice flies — and it could've been much worse as he pitched out of a big jam early in the game, but after those first two innings, the Rangers veteran settled in and got through seven innings at just north of 100 pitches.
Lewis' consistency this year, other than that one outlier two starts ago, has been huge for the Rangers' staff that was missing ace Yu Darvish from the word "go" and projected No. 2 starter Derek Holland after just one inning of his season. He's been a great example to the Rangers' young starters and has helped keep this thing afloat, and he should be commended for it.
