Lewis' Bad Inning Kills Him

It was a big step for Colby Lewis to get through six innings in his start on Tuesday night — his first six-inning outing since June 2012.

If you're looking for positives about the veteran's outing, they pretty much stop there.

Lewis gave up hits in the first two innings on Tuesday but worked around them and got out of jams, but the third inning told a different story. Lewis saw eight Mariners hitters come to the plate and gave up four singles and two walks — nothing hit hard — to give the M's four runs and take away the Rangers' 1-0 lead in a hurry after Adrian Beltre had hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second.

Lewis is still working to recover what he had before requiring elbow surgery in 2012 and later hip resurfacing surgery in 2013, and no one expected him to be lights out from the get-go. Now, after seven starts, he's 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA, leaving the Rangers and probably Lewis wondering when and if he'll get back to where he was before his injuries.

The next goal for Lewis will be to throw six innings and leave the game with a lead. One step at a time, I suppose.
