Kelly Hiring Could Take Kaepernick Off Table

Along with guys like Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been mentioned as a possible cast-off superstar to come to Dallas and serve as Tony Romo's backup quarterback.

Kaepernick, if you'll remember, was in a Super Bowl just a few years ago with the 49ers and was one of the league's most dynamic, young players. Then, it all fell apart and he was benched this season in favor of Blaine Gabbert before having season-ending surgery.

Now, Kaepernick is owed $11.9 million guaranteed for 2016 if he's still on the roster on April 1, which had many people wondering if the 49ers would trade or release the talented, yet erratic quarterback.

Then came Thursday, when the 49ers announced Chip Kelly as their new head coach. Kelly's fast-paced offense seems tailor-made for Kaepernick, a guy with a rocket arm and fantastic running ability and elusiveness.

So, gut reaction of course is that Kelly has his guy to run his system in place and Kaepernick won't hit the market, now it's just up to Kelly and the 49ers' front office to make that decision final.
