Jerry on QB Change: Weeden Wouldn't Take Chances, Cassel Will

Last week, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett declared that there were a lot of different reasons the team decided to move on from Brandon Weeden to Matt Cassel. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones, following up on those comments, recently outlined what we’d imagine is one of the bigger of all those reasons.

To hear Jones tell it, as he did Friday afternoon on 105.3-FM The Fan, it was ultimately Weeden’s refusal to take chances that led to his benching. Jones even admitted that he was all for Weeden playing ultra-conservative until he saw that wasn’t working--Dallas went 0-3 with in Weeden’s starts, and looked inconsistent at best and pitiful at worst on offense.

At the very least, it seems Jones believes Cassel will play to win, whereas Weeden was playing not to lose.

“I think he’s also got experience in basically just stepping up in the pocket and making some plays,” Jones said of Cassel, via ProFootballTalk. “Now, he will, with that experience though, do something that Weeden was not doing. Weeden was so conservative, he was coached to be conservative to a degree, but he was not taking chances with that ball. Now, we know you can’t make plays if you don’t take some chances. So, we’ll see more of that. We could see the risk of that hit us a little bit, but hopefully we’ll be getting our share of them over on the defense with this group we’ve got.”
