Jerry Jones Would Consider Trading 2016 First Round Pick

Jones said last week that now would be a good time to make such a move

With a 35-year-old franchise quarterback with two back surgeries in his recent past at the helm, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is looking to win now--and this mindset means he’d potentially be willing to trade the team’s 2016 first round pick for a piece that could help them do that.

"I'd be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with Romo, his career and where we are with what we've put together, it's a good time to go for it," Jones told 105.3-FM The Fan last week, per FOX Sports Southwest.

Also making it a good time to go for it is the fact that Dallas came away from the draft with three players with first round-level talent.

Defensive end Randy Gregory slipped to them in the second round following his positive test for marijuana at the Combine, possible top 10 pick; offensive tackle La’el Collins dropped out of the draft completely after being interviewed by police about the murder of a pregnant woman in Baton Rouge--a case in which he is not a suspect or a person of interest--and signed with Dallas as a free agent last week; and cornerback Byron Jones was, simply enough, drafted 27th overall by the team.

Even with that windfall, we get the feeling Jones would have to really, really love a deal to part with next year’s first round pick.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow,” Jones said of trading a first round pick. “I've done that two times, and I'm telling you, that hurts bad the next draft day.”
