At this time of year, it’s best to take everything anyone close to an NFL front office says with a grain of salt. That said, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has said a lot about Kellen Moore, one of the three backups who combined to go 1-11 for Dallas in Tony Romo’s absence last year.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, Jones was asked twice about the idea of going out and getting a veteran backup at the Combine, and both times he responded by offering praise for Moore.

I’m looking at the positive, the negatives were obvious,” Jones said, per ESPN Dallas. “You can’t win making those kinds of bad plays—I’m talking about the turnovers and interceptions. On the other hand, for someone that had never played in a game, he did some really impressive things. There’s no question in my mind that he can ultimately play and win games as a quarterback in the NFL—Kellen Moore can. There’s no question in my mind.

“Now, along the way will he lose more than you can afford to be around for when he does win one, or win two or three? That’s the big question. So I’m not basically saying he can take you to a division or a Super Bowl. I don’t know that. But I will say that he’s got something special.”

Moore completed 58.7 percent of his passes in three games (two starts) for Dallas, for 779 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions.
